(CMR) Disgraced former police officer Daniel Ezra Meeks was sentenced last week to three years in jail after being found guilty in early February of attempting to defraud a local pensioner of her home.
The trial judge, Justice Dobbs, found him guilty after hearing how he moved quickly to swindled a particularly vulnerable retiree out of her George Town home after meeting her during the course of his duties. Meeks was found guilty of taking advantage of his trusted position as a police officer when he attended her house in November 2017 to assist with a domestic violence incident.
It was revealed during the trial that in the space of one week Meeks had her property transferred into his name. However, the victim who admitted to having issues reading told her daughter about the transfer and the authorities were alerted.
Initially, Meeks had potential explanations for his behavior. However, during cross-examination in the December trial, Crown Counsel Candia James-Malcolm discredited him leaving the judge to conclude that his version of events was “implausible”.
He had claimed that he did not think the transaction was unprofessional or questionable in any way or that it went against the code of conduct that he has sworn to upload. Meeks claimed he was acting out of the goodness of his heart and wanted to provide for the severely handicapped grandson of the elderly lady.
Meeks has been in jail since December when his sureties were not able to put together the required funds. His wife, Cavenna Ellis, is also incarcerated for stealing from Logic, her former employer.
