(CMR) Police in China have arrested 42 persons for price gouging among other offenses as it relates to the raw materials used to produce face masks-which have become critical in the fight against COVID-19.
The 42 suspects have also been accused of producing masks with poor materials for resale, said the Ministry of Public Security on Friday.
The Ministry of Public Security in a statement revealed that a task force had been created to fight against crimes related to the production of face masks.
The ministry statement further revealed that in early March, raids in the southern industrial hub of Guangdong and three other provinces resulted in the seizure of material worth more than 34 million yuan (almost $5 million).
China is said to be implementing stricter measures as it relates to the production of masks, as there have been complaints about quality standards following complaints from some countries about inferior products.
