(CMR) United States Senator Bernie Sanders dropped out of the 2020 presidential race earlier today. He confirmed the news on his Twitter, telling followers, “I am suspending my campaign. But while the campaign ends, the struggle for justice continues on”.
Sanders who was an early front-runner, with strong performances in primary states like Iowa and New Hampshire told supporters that winning the nomination for the Democratic party was“virtually impossible.”
“While we are winning the ideological battle and while we are winning the support of so many young people and working people throughout the country, I have concluded that this battle for the Democratic nomination will not be successful,” Sanders said in a video address to supporters.
US President Donald Trump was quick in reacting to news of the suspension of Sanders' campaign.
“This ended just like the Democrats & the DNC wanted, same as the Crooked Hillary fiasco,” Trump said on Twitter.
“The Bernie people should come to the Republican Party,” added Trump.
78-year-old Sanders who ran for the post of president once before in 2016, is unlikely to run for the post a third time.
