(CMR) Police in Jamaica on Sunday dispersed a church gathering in Portmore which was in breach of recently implemented laws prohibiting mass gatherings.
Reports from the police are that officers assigned to the Portmore Operational Support Team were at about 9:15 a.m. alerted to a location in Portmore, St Catherine due to noise complaints.
After arriving at the location, checks were made which revealed that a church service was in progress at a house in the Greggory Park community, with over 50 persons in attendance.
The leader of the gathering, Pastor Cynthia Williams, was taken into police custody for breaching the Disaster Risk Management (Enforcement Measures) (No 2) Order 2020.
The Jamaican police used the occasion to remind persons, hat no more than 10 persons are permitted to gather in a given area; breaching the order could result in fines of up to JMD one million and imprisonment for up to one year.
Williams is scheduled to appear before the St. Catherine Parish Court on July 28.
