(CMR) Caribbean Utilities Company (CUC) is prepared to assist consumers who have been made unemployed or had significant income reductions as a result of the shutdowns because of the COVID-19 pandemic and local shutdown. They will be immediately discontinuing disconnections for the remainder of March and offering qualified customers account payment deferrals.
CMR has received confirmation that they are prepared to delay payments for a maximum of three months for up to a maximum of $900.00 for qualified customers who have no or reduced incomes. The maximum is $300 per month. They will also not be charging interest penalties. CUC stressed that this is to be for industries “whose operations have essentially halted” and is to be considered in “extenuating circumstances”. Any amount exceeding $300 must be paid.
Qualifying customers must provide proof of unemployment or reduced earnings from their employers and will be allowed to apply for this delayed payment option. They will also be given up to six months to pay the account off the delayed payments at the end of the three month period. Customers will be allowed a fourth payment extension should they quality. Normally there are three allowed in any 12-month period.
Anyone who needs to verify if they qualify for this temporary assistance with their electricity should contact the company directly for further details. This is not something that will be automatically applied but will be considered on a case by case basis for account holders. Renters will need to have their landlords, as account holders, request and quality for any available options.
