(CMR) Some royal watchers were surprised today to hear that Prince Harry (37) and Meghan (38), the Duchess of Susses would be stepping down from their roles as senior members of the British royal family and are making plans to be “financially independent” while splitting their time between the UK and North America.

The announcement was made earlier today:

“After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year. “We intend to step back as ‘senior' members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen,”

they wrote on Instagram, explaining that they hope to “carve out a progressive new role within this institution.”

“This geographic balance will enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity,” We look forward to sharing the full details of this exciting next step in due course, as we continue to collaborate with Her Majesty The Queen, The Prince of Wales, The Duke of Cambridge and all relevant parties. Until then, please accept our deepest thanks for your continued support.”

It is understood that the couple did not consult any other members of the royal family about their decision with some claiming that this has caused a mood of deep disappointment in the palace following the announcement; senior members of the family are hurt as a result of the news. The Royal Communication division of the palace issued a statement several hours later indicating that the matter was “complication” and it would take time to resolve the issue.
Palace responds
Since marrying into the royal family there has been much speculation that Duchess Meghan and Prince Harry craved a private life away from royal critics. The couple has struggled with the treatment and scrutiny Meghan has undergone and likened it to what his mother endured. Members of the press have criticized them for not giving sufficient public access given that they are funded by the public purse – now that will no longer be an issue.
The couple met in 2016 and wed in May 2018. They welcomed their first son Archie Harrison Mountbatten Windsor, in May 2019. The Sussexes and baby Archie spent the Christmas holidays in Canada with Meghan's mother, Doria Ragland.
