(CMR) The Sandbar was closed this morning to boaters and tour operators because of rough weather. They were originally informed this morning at around 7:30 am that no boats would be allowed due to the rough seas and that it would be re-assessed at noon.
However, tour operators are stating that the police informed them due to other competing obligations they have not been able to return to the site to make a determination based on real-time weather conditions. Despite that, an announcement was sent out at 3:15 pm that they sandbar would remain closed for the remainder of the day.
Tour operators are sharing their displeasure with the police over this decision stating that it's costing them a lot of money today when in fact the sea conditions have returned to normal and pose no risk. The RCIPS/police are now responsible for the sandbar enforcement and no longer the port authority after the setup of the new customs and border control agency.
Some boat operators are in fact ignoring the RCIPS and conducting their scheduled afternoon tours. Others have questioned under what law is the police operating to issue tickets for anyone in contravention of their instructions given that “nothing has been properly gazetted as yet.”
Cruise ships were also docked at Spotts Dock due to the inclement weather.
