(CMR) The Cayman Islands Government is supporting Car Free Day tomorrow by encouraging civil servants to carpool on Friday, September 20.
The supportive effort is encouraging to walk, cycle or carpool together instead of driving individually. In order to motivate people to do just that anyone who drives to work alone will have to part the farthest and walk to the Government Administration Building (GAB).
They issued some guidelines that include parking in the Auxillary Parking lot behind immigration. They will not be able to access central parking in the GAB lot. Once those spots are gone alternative parking will have to be sought.
Cyclists will be given priority spots in the GAB parking lot. The government will also provide courtesy bicycles for people who wish to take advantage of those during the day. Ride buses will also be provided for people to take advantage of as well.
The first 200 people participating in the Car Free Day will receive coffe and patties.
Car Free Day is technically on Sunday, September 22nd and was organized for people around the world to give up using their cars for the day. This event started in an ad hoc matter after the 1973 oil crisis and was formalized in a more structured manner in October 1994. Proponents say it encourages people to understand how cars have an impact on the environment and the overall quality of our lives.
