Wilbur Thompson

(CMR) Local businessman and owner of Thompson Shipping, Wilbur Marion Thompson (Bing) is suing Health City Cayman Islands Ltd.

A Writ of Summons was filed on August 2, 2019, in the Grand Court of the Cayman Islands alleging negligence on the part of Dr. Susheel Amarlal Wadhwa and his employer, Health City.

According to the Statement of Claim, around August 4, 2016, Thompson went to the East End facility complaining of a back issue. An MRI was required at the facility and he was advised that he had two herniated discs in his spine. Surgery was the recommended course of action; which Thompson agreed to.

The following day he was to undergo pre-surgical bloodwork at the hospital. The bloodwork found that the patient had serum sodium and blood chloride below the recommended levels. However, the surgery was performed. Shortly thereafter the Plaintiff complained of muscle cramps, constipation, confusion and inability to urinate.

He left the hospital around August 13th but had to be re-admitted to the facility around the 17th due to an inability to have bowel movements and urinate without discomfort.

At that time he was diagnosed with Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) and treatment was started for that condition. The document alleges he was not suffering from GBS and quickly deteriorated. Thompson had to be airlifted to Florida for treatment overseas.

There is a list of items provided as the particulars of negligence in his claim; including:

He is suing them for negligence in failing to disclose to him the low levels of serum sodium and blood chloride and the risk those numbers posed post-surgery. He is also alleging negligence in operating on him in such a condition and failing to manage his injury properly. He also alleges failure to provide competent or sufficiently trained medical staff. He further alleges negligence in misdiagnosing him with GBS.

He then listed 22 particulars of injury including but not limited to dementia, difficulty responding to verbal information, temporary loss of speech, renal insufficiency and decreased short-term memory loss.

In addition, Thompson is claiming over CI $106,000 in special damages for related expenses to his care and future special damages.
