(CMR) Last week Thursday two tarantulas were discovered at the North Side Fire Station. The fire station officers contacted several agencies including the RCIPS and Department of Environment.
After some confusion about who should take responsibility for the arthropods, they were eventually collected by the Department of Agriculture. However, by the time they were apprehended by DOA only one could be found.
We understand from our sources that there are some persons thinking that Cayman may actually have an indigenous species of tarantulas. There is now a call to do some additional research and locate any others that may exist.
If anyone sees one contact the Department of Environment.
Tarantulas comprise a group of large and often hairy spiders belonging to the family Theraphosidae. There are currently about 1000 species that have been identified. Despite being feared by many because of their large, hairy bodies and legs and ability to leave a painful bite; their venom has low toxicity to people.
Some places in the world enjoy tarantulas as a delicacy.
