(CMR) Senior citizen Elvis McKeever (60) of Cayman Brac has started on petition for the decriminalization of marijuana after he was arrested last week for growing some 46 plants.
His viral Facebook video calls on the government to make some changes to the law stating that it's time this matter is changed. He shared that age 15 he was first arrested and prosecuted for marijuana possession which prevented him from being able to attend any schools in the Cayman Islands. Now he argues that some 46 years later he is faced with the the possibility of criminal prosecution for growing plants on his land in Cayman Brac.
Whilst there's no detailed information on what he was planning to do with all that marijuana he makes a case for its decriminalization which many appear to be in support of. He has stated that its time for the decriminalization of the cultivation of the plant for medicinal purposes as well as for personal and recreational purposes.
He claims that the government has campaigned on the decriminalization of the drug; but has fallen back on their promises. He further states that the government is wasting resources on prosecuting this offense; resources which could be used to focused on other high risk crimes.
So far his video has had over 40 shares and a number of supporters.
