(CMR) Jeffrey William Powery (32) accepted a plea deal on Friday where he accepted that he intentionally caused grievous bodily harm to his own mother on December 12, 2018.
Originally charged with attempted murder he has pleaded not guilty to that charge. However, Crown Counsel Greg Walcolm told Justice Roger Chapple that the prosecution was willing to accept a guilty plea to the lesser charge.
The woman was originally found unresponsive in her home after Powery assaulted her at her address on North West Point Road. CMR reported the details on the initial incident on December 14. We understand that this was not the first time he had assaulted her and persons in the neighborhood were gravely concerned about her well being. In fact, it was one of them that alerted the authorities that she had not been seen for a number of days at the time of the incident. When police found her she was near death.
The court was advised that his mother, Jolene Powery, is currently in Miami receiving medical treatment and would not be able to provide a victim impact statement. Her local physician is expected to provide a medical report.
Few other details were given in court, but the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service did issue a statement on 14 Dec.
Jeffrey Powery was represented by attorney Jonathon Hughes and sentencing is set for some time after 29 Aug.
