(CMR) Local internet and TV provider Logic initially blamed FLOW for an outrage that saw most of the island without fibre internet service on Friday evening. They initially posted a comment as 11:21 pm indicating “C&W were attempting maintenance on the sub-sea cables and have caused an outage.”
However, they later amended the post to state that “an upstream provider” was to blame removing direct reference to local provider C&W/FLOW. Nonetheless, they have since sent an email apologizing and explaining that it was caused by a “perfect storm”. They have indicated that it was a three hour outage.
We understand that FLOW owns the sub-sea cables and all other providers have to purchase access to those from them.
They explained that they rely on two sub-sea cable that come into the Cayman Islands. Apparently, despite purchasing sufficient bandwidth on both they had an issue with both being impacted by this situation.
They have stated that they are working on finding out precisely what caused the issue and caused this “an extremely rare case” and are working diligently to ensure it doesn't happen again.
In the past the ICTA/OfReg has expressed concerns about the need for better redundancy systems in place should something impact the only two cable that provide internet connectivity to the entire country.
