(CMR) The Opposition has a started a petition to hold the government accountable for the ongoing garbage collection woes that have plagued the island for most of Minister Seymour's administration.
Despite the dismissal of its previous director, the Department of Environmental Health continues to struggle with garbage collection especially during the busy holiday season. We understand that DEH has informed the Opposition that they have low staff compliments and non-working trucks. However, during the recent sitting of the Legislative Assembly the Opposition questioned the arrival of the new trucks and was informed that no order had been placed because that is not the issue.
Opposition Deputy Leader, Alva Suckoo, stated that he is tired of this circular issue with no real resolution in sight:
“It’s seems we are going in circles with this and I’m not sure if the Ministry and Minister really have a good understanding of how frustrating and hazardous this situation has become. I can only promise to keep the pressure on because it seems, when we raise the concerns, that we are dismissed as a bunch of complainers. I would urge everyone to sign this petition so when we raise these concerns the Government understands that it is not just the Opposition playing politics.”
He is encouraging everyone to sign the petition to agitate the government to find a more immediate resolution.
One reader shared a photo of the DEH recycling bins by Kirk Market after he saw tourists taking a photo of the overfilled bins.
The petition already has over 538 signatures.
