(CMR) The Royal Cayman Islands Police Service (RCIPS) have identified 56-year-old Susan Simoy Sumalapao, of the Philippines as Thursday's accident victim.
Sumalapao was attempting to cross the Esterly Tibbetts bypass close to the Yacht Club during morning commuter traffic and was hit by a male driver. Sources indicate that she was on her way to work as a domestic helper and has resided in the Cayman Islands for around seven years.
Authorities have confirmed Sumalapao was single and had no children BUT CMR sources indicated she does have children and grandchildren. She has 3 children – 2 girls and the youngest is a boy.
She was well respected among the local Filipino community and was affectionately called Ate Susan. We understand that this is a very difficult time for her family as she was the primary breadwinner – sending money back to assist them.
Police have since reached out to the public in an appeal for eyewitness in Thursday morning’s fatal collision. The Royal Cayman Islands Police Service have said that they were particularly interested in speaking with the occupants of a dark-colored Chevrolet Avalanche that passed the area at the exact time of the collision.
Condolences started flooding her Facebook social media page on Friday morning. She had just celebrated a birthday Christmas Eve.
CMR wishes to extend our sincere condolences to her family.
