(CMR) Beach debris is causing both an unsightly problem on Seven Mile public beach and also a safety issue according to beachgoers.
Cayman Marl Road has been contacted about a substantial pile of debris from a beach vendor that has been discarded. One beachgoer said she understands that the beach float business was sold and the new owner simply discarded everything on the beach. The unsightly pile has metal rods sticking out of it and a child was almost injured there. There is also a mixture of garbage that has now accumulated with the beach float debris as well.
Our sources inform us that the debris has been there for months and we are uncertain about the cleanup procedures especially since the government has been lagging behind with regular residential pick-ups.
One resident commented:
Not only his this unsafe but it's a real eye sore for our tourists. I can only imagine what our visitors are now thinking of us. Government should find out who owns the business and force them to remove this debris and also fine them. This is not someone who cares about our islands.
Another beachgoer doubts anything will be done about it given that the government was not able to make the beach vendors comply with other business requirements to be fully licensed and operation. She stated:
Since government had to accommodate them it appears they know they have the upper hand there and will do whatever they want without any concern about our tourism product and environment.
Social media posters were disgusted by the pictures and videos depicting the scene. According to the government's website the Recreation, Parks and Cemeteries Unit (RPCU) is responsible for this beach and was formed in July 2006 and currently operates with 29 staff (20 facility staff; 3 heavy equip. staff; and 6 admin. staff).
Its overall goal is to manage, maintain, develop and enhance the following Public Facilities in Grand Cayman (over 100 facilities). We note with interest the website has not been updated in over 4 years.
