(CMR) Two cabinet ministers in Bermuda resigned late Monday (July 6) after they were seen in a video, which went viral, flouting COVID-19 health restrictions.
Both Zane DeSilva and Wayne Caine,who served as Minister of Tourism and Transport and Minister of National Security respectively, have resigned.
In the video, Caines and DeSilva are seen at the Blu Bar and Grill Restaurant in a crowd of patrons who were not wearing masks.
The Blu Bar and Grill has since acknowledged that a fundraising dinner was held at the establishment on July 3 however sought to absolve itself of blame as it noting that protocols were followed.
“Guests had arrived wearing masks, sanitized their hands and were temperature checked by security at the entrance,” revealed the establishment.
“The sit-down dinner proceeded without any incident during the 2 hour period, however at the end of the evening a surprise saxophonist played as some guests were leaving and, in the excitement, social distancing was not maintained, “added the restaurant in a release.
Premier of Bermuda David Burt has denounced the behaviour of the two cabinet ministers noting that their actions did not reflect the “government’s months of struggle and hard work to keep Bermuda safe.”
“Every citizen has been forced to make significant changes in how we live, work and socialize; ministers are no different, ” said Burt.
Premier Burt further noted that the duo had “accepted his invitation to resign from the Cabinet.”
“As these men depart the Cabinet I am frustrated and immensely disappointed that this incident has deprived the community of two extremely hardworking and dedicated ministers, added Burt.
